{"id":299,"date":"2023-04-21T19:38:44","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T23:38:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.functionalprototype.com\/news\/?p=299"},"modified":"2023-04-21T19:38:44","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T23:38:44","slug":"cleaner-air-in-allegheny-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.functionalprototype.com\/news\/2023\/04\/21\/cleaner-air-in-allegheny-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Clean(er) Air in Allegheny County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past winter I was in a couple of cohorts for the <a href=\"https:\/\/rocis.org\/\">ROCIS<\/a> program.\u00a0 They loan you air quality sensors to use inside and outside your home and teach you quite a bit about internal, residential air pollution. I learned a <strong>lot<\/strong> about how bad the outside air is and that we&#8217;re one of the most polluted areas in the US.\u00a0 I took notes\/links and will start posting some of what I&#8217;ve learned here in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.functionalprototype.com\/news\/category\/design\/environmental\/\">Environmental<\/a> category.<\/p>\n<p>I have also &#8220;drank the Kool-Aid&#8221; and am ready to convert from gas to an electric convection oven\/stove top.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve already bought a l<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3oxpFFo\">arger toaster oven \/ air fryer<\/a> and used it for everything from pizza to r<span class=\"js-about-item-abstr\">otisserie chicken to baked chicken and baked potatoes.\u00a0 All without needing to run the kitchen exhaust fan to dump all the NOx fumes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Probably the most surprising thing I learned is that my air quality sensors aren&#8217;t nearly as craptastic as I thought.\u00a0 The outside air where I live (near Regent Square) is kinda awful, so opening up the windows I get readings of just how awful.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/plumepgh.org\/?date=2023-04-20\">visualization of yesterday&#8217;s pollution<\/a> done by <a href=\"https:\/\/plumepgh.org\/about.html\">PlumePGH<\/a>, there&#8217;s a lot of history on that site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past winter I was in a couple of cohorts for the ROCIS program.\u00a0 They loan you air quality sensors to use inside and outside your home and teach you quite a bit about internal, residential air pollution.
